Chelsea are closing in on appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their head coach. Pochettino is the favourite and there is growing confidence talks will end in a successful conclusion.

The former Tottenham manager took over as the front-runner after Julian Nagelsmann withdrew from the running at the conclusion of last week. The former Tottenham manager has been jobless since leaving Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

After several fruitful meetings with Chelsea’s owners, Pochettino is believed to be close to being officially named Graham Potter’s permanent replacement. However, it has been emphasized that the agreement is still in limbo and that the club has backup plans in case talks break down.

After turbulent first season, Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali,

Chelsea’s controlling co-owners, are under pressure to select the best candidate. Pochettino would be the third permanent manager to operate under this ownership, and his connections to Spurs are unlikely to prevent him from accepting the position. After dismissing Potter this month, Chelsea appointed Frank Lampard as interim manager.

After Thomas Tuchel’s shocking firing in September, Potter, who had only been in the position for seven months, was appointed. But following disastrous run, Chelsea, who have spent nearly £600 million since last summer, sacked the former Brighton manager. The Premier League’s 11th place Chelsea team has little chance of competing in Europe next year.
